Upcoming German elections 2025 – what scenarios for the EU?

Editorial

The 2025 German elections will be a decisive moment for the future not only of Germany but also of Europe, in a highly fragmented political landscape. While traditional parties like the CDU/CSU seek to regain ground, the AfD continues to grow, particularly in the former East Germany, where economic discontent is more pronounced. The AfD capitalizes on this social frustration with eurosceptic and nationalist rhetoric, fueling tensions that undermine the country’s unity. The mass protests of January 2024, which saw over 1.4 million people demonstrating against the danger of a neo-Nazi drift in the country, reflect the growing polarization of German society and the serious concerns of democratic voters.

The AfD’s success could have repercussions not only on domestic politics but also on the entire European balance, strengthening similar movements in other countries and putting at risk the democratic and cohesive values of the European Union. Thus, the German elections will not only shape the future of Germany but also the political direction of Europe at a time of growing global instability.
