The latest EU summit outcomes
Editorial 1 April 2025The European Council summit of March 20, 2025, reaffirmed the EU’s unity in supporting Ukraine—though not without internal friction. Twenty-six leaders backed continued political, financial, and military aid to Kyiv at a critical juncture in the war. However, Hungary’s Viktor Orbán once again blocked formal approval, isolating himself from an increasingly determined European bloc. Discussions also focused on boosting EU economic competitiveness, supporting the defense industry, and implementing the ReArm plan. The Commission confirmed a €3.5 billion disbursement to Ukraine by the end of March. The summit revealed a two-speed Europe: strategically aligned, yet still hostage to political vetoes. The message is clear: without institutional reform, the Union’s effectiveness remains fragile. What’s needed now is courage, vision, and consistency.
