The destiny of two superpowers: Russia and US at vote in 2024
Editorial 15 January 20242024: A crossroads for the destinies of the world and democratic institutions.
On January 15th, with the Republican caucuses in Iowa, the USA officially inaugurates the long electoral period that will end on November 5th with election day. Most of the political analysts consider Donald Trump’s victory in the Republican primaries a certainty, setting up a subsequent challenge to Joe Biden in the November elections.
Will this really be the case? Will Donald Trump be able to confirm his lead in the polls and be crowned as the GOP candidate? Or will the outsider Nikki Haley manage to overturn all predictions and become the Republican candidate herself? What is certain is that in the coming months, Trump will have to worry about his legal troubles in addition to running in the primaries.
If the tycoon really does win the Republican primaries, in November we will witness a challenge not only between two candidates but between two different visions of America and even of democracy.
But 2024, like the perfect script for a movie, also includes elections in Russia. While the contest in the USA, as always happens in a democracy, is open, there are few doubts about the re-election of Vladimir Putin in the Russian autocracy.
It is not a euphemism to say that the year just begun represents a crossroads for the destinies of the world and democratic institutions.
