ReArm Europe: The EU Moves Towards Common Defense
Editorial 15 March 2025The leaders of the 27 EU countries have given an initial informal approval to the “ReArm Europe” plan, marking a decisive step towards greater strategic autonomy. The measure, which will be formally approved at the next European Council meeting on March 20-21, foresees investments of up to €800 billion to strengthen Europe’s defense capabilities. The decision comes in an unstable geopolitical context, with the new world order taking shape after the first weeks of Trump’s second administration and the downsizing of U.S. military support for Europe. The strategy aims to boost European arms production, enhance air and cyber defense, and coordinate the defense industry among member states. The plan also includes a temporary suspension of budget constraints to allow countries to increase military spending. However, the formal adoption in late March may face resistance from some states concerned about the economic impact of the initiative. Europe faces a crucial choice: becoming an independent global player in security matters or continuing to rely on the uncertainties of U.S. politics. The final approval of “ReArm Europe” could mark a historic turning point in building a common European defense.
