Is Europe United? EU dream faces growing scepticism
Editorial 29 April 2025Europe is walking a fine line between unity and fragmentation. The war in Ukraine has deepened rifts within the bloc, exposing cracks in a project already under pressure. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico’s plan to attend Moscow’s May 9 Victory Day parade — defying EU warnings — has sharpened concerns over the Union’s cohesion. Yet signs of solidarity persist: the gathering of Western leaders at Pope Francis’ funeral reminded the world that Europe can still rally around its core values. Symbolism, however, is not enough. To keep the European dream alive, leaders must turn goodwill into action — and prove that unity is more than just a memory.
