Faced with a series of overwhelming global challenges, the 2022 Commission Work Program sets out a number of key objectives within an ambitious and transformative agenda, towards a post-COVID-19 Europe that will be “greener, fairer, more digital and more resilient”. Among the relevant events affecting the year ahead, France is set to take over the rotating presidency of the EU Council in the first half of 2022  and this period will coincide with the French elections – creating a strong correlation between these two items on the French political agenda; in view of the 2022 Rule of Law Report, the European Commission launched a targeted consultation to collect information about developments related to the Rule of Law in Member States and furthermore, due to the economic crisis caused by the pandemic and the subsequent activation of the general escape clause of the Stability and Growth Pact (SGP), only one year is left to see if and how the pact will return.
