Following the approval of the annual Work Plan for the PRIMA – Joint Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area initiative, the calls for applications for 2022 have been opened.

The PRIMA programme’s overall objective is to build research and innovation capacities to develop knowledge and common innovative solutions to make food systems and water provision more sustainable and resilient to climate change in the Mediterranean area.

Through its programme, PRIMA will contribute to solving water scarcity, food security, nutrition, health, well-being and migration problems contributing significantly to the 2030 United Nations Agenda for Sustainable Development in the Mediterranean Region.

As of 10 April 2018, the PRIMA programme counts 19 Participating States (PS): Algeria, Croatia, Cyprus, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Lebanon, Luxembourg, Malta, Morocco, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Tunisia and Turkey.

PRIMA programme activities will be implemented in three sections. Specifically, the Section 2 Call 2021 will focus on a unique call for RIA, addressing the following topics:

1- Thematic Area 1-Water Management:

• Topic 2.1.1 RIA Prevent and reduce land and water salinization and pollution due to agri-food

activities

2- Thematic Area 2-Farming Systems:

• Topic 2.2.1 RIA Improving the sustainability of agro-pastoralism in the Mediterranean Region

under the context of climate change

3- Thematic Area 3-Agrofood Chain:

• Topic 2.3.1 RIA Enabling the transition to healthy and sustainable dietary behavior

The call requires compliance with both international (Horizon 2020) and national rules of participation (the latter are reported in the “National Regulations” document). The selected projects are financed with resources from the individual countries participating in PRIMA, which amount to a total of 35.5 million euros.

Deadline and submission of applications

A two-stage procedure is foreseen for the submission of project proposals. In the first phase, a preliminary proposal must be submitted. Only proposals that pass phase 1 are admitted to phase 2 and invited to submit the complete proposal for final evaluation.

The preliminary proposal (phase 1) must be submitted by 22 March 2022, 5.00 pm CET, while the complete proposal (phase 2) must be submitted by 13 September, 17:00 CET.
