The EU and the World in 2025
Editorial 28 December 20242025 will be a crucial year for the European Union and the World, marked by the start of the new Trump administration at a time of significant fragility for Europe. The leadership crisis in France and Germany leaves the EU vulnerable, just as it faces global challenges such as ongoing conflicts and the issue of trade tariffs that the new U.S. administration is likely to impose. On the Russia-Ukraine war front, the possibility of peace is emerging, but the process will be delicate and will require Europe’s full commitment as a credible mediator alongside the U.S. Meanwhile, other conflicts, starting with those in the Middle East, continue to demand decisive responses that risk being ineffective without a united EU. The year 2025 will be when Europe must decide: be prepared to reclaim its global role or risk being marginalized in an increasingly competitive and unstable world.
